What are the Different Types and Treatments of Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the type of cancer that spikes up in the prostate gland of man which is a small walnut-shaped gland that produces a fluid called the seminal fluid. The seminal fluid nourishes the sperm and transports it. It is one of the most common types of cancer that affects men. Based on the type of prostate cancer the treatment differs from person to person.

  • Neuroendocrine tumors
  • Transitional cell carcinomas

Treatment for prostate cancer

A wide array of treatment options is available for treating prostate cancer. Your oncology specialist will suggest the best prostate cancer treatment that will be suitable based on your conditions.

Active surveillance: your doctor will keep you under the constant monitor to see whether cancer will spread and grow further. The doctor will see whether symptoms are shown and how it makes you feel. Tests like prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE) will be performed from time to time to see the growth of the tumor.

Surgery: If your cancer hasn’t spread from the prostate then it is the best option. Your doctor will perform either a prostatectomy to remove the gland or radical prostatectomy to remove both the glands and the cells surrounding it.

Radiation therapy: two types of radiation therapy are used to treat the prostate. One is External radiation therapy and the other is internal radiation therapy which is also known as brachytherapy.

Some of the prostate cancer treatment procedures that are still under investigation are as follows

  • Cryotherapy: placing a probe near the area of origin and freeze the growth or kill the cells.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Biological therapy
  • High-intensity focused ultrasound
  • Hormone therapy
