Food Precautions to Maintain Following Cancer Treatment
Most cancer patients know about the treatment process but when it comes to food choices, they generally do not have much information. As such they have to rely on their healthcare provider for help in this area. However, patients should not always rely on a single source of information.
Mentioned below are a few food groups which should be consumed after considering their pros and cons with regards to the best treatment for cancer survivors in India. It is worth noting that a cancer survivor is an individual who has been diagnosed with cancer irrespective of whether that person is in treatment or not.
Antioxidants
Vitamins C, E, carotenoids, and phytochemicals are what constitute antioxidants. Research has shown that antioxidants help prevent cell damage. The cell damage has been linked with cancer. As such, antioxidants are considered to help prevent cancer.
Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants and people who consume these two items more are less likely to develop cancer. Those who already have cancer are always at great risk of second cancers and should thus eat foods which are rich in antioxidants.
Organic Foods
Organic foods are referred to those foods which are grown without any pesticides or do not have any genetic alterations in them. They can be used to refer to poultry, meat, and dairy products apart from fruits and vegetables. Organic foods are generally considered to be better as they prevent exposure to certain chemicals. This is why even though there is no direct evidence to prove that they may help prevent cancer, they surely are better than non-organic foods owing to their nutritional value.
Meats
Numerous studies have shown that eating large amounts of red and processed meat are linked with increased chances of prostate, stomach, and colorectal cancer. Research has also shown that broiling, grilling, and frying meats at very high temperatures creates chemicals which can increase the risk of some types of cancer. As such, it is considered safe to limit the intake of processed and red meat and prevent cooking them at high temperatures.
