How to Diagnosis and Treatments of Blood Cancer?

Blood cancer is also known as hematologic cancers develop in the bone marrow where the blood is produced. These cancers remain a challenging group of diseases with many types and sub types. Blood cancer begins with the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells which prevent the blood cells in performing their normal functions. In a healthy body, new white blood cells are regularly generated to replace the old and during white blood cells. The excessive production of white blood cells in the bone marrow leads to blood cancers. The three main types of blood cancers are Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma. Though each type of blood cancer is different, they share some common symptoms and they are:

  • Loss of appetite or nausea
  • Night sweats
  • Persistent weakness and fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

Diagnosis and Staging:

Staging is a process that tells how far cancer has spread and its severity. Diagnosis and staging often happen at the same time. The following test procedures are followed to diagnose blood cancers:

  • Blood tests
  • Bone marrow exam
  • Diagnostic imaging tests – CT scan, PET scan and X-ray
  • Physical exam
  • Surgical lymph node removal (for examination)

Through staging, the exact type, location and spread of the blood cancer is made known. Though staging systems are consistent for another type of cancers, in blood cancer it differs based on each type.
