Gene Therapy - How it is Used to Treat Cancer

Gene therapy is a huge breakthrough in the achievements of medical science.
Gene therapy refers to a way of preventing or treating disease by the way of altering the genetic instructions within the cells of an individual.



Genes in the body are responsible for each aspect of cell life as they hold the code for the proteins which further enable the cells to develop, function as well as divide.

If a gene is found defective, it gives rise to proteins that are unable to perform their job. If these genes go missing, the functions of the body are impaired.

Gene therapy is also considered to be a great alternative for the treatment of cancer. The therapy uses genetic material or DNA as a means of treatment.

DNA is considered to be a long molecule which encodes the genetic information. During gene therapy, DNA coding for particular genes is delivered to the individual cells in the body of a person.

A number of breast cancer hospitals in India are now making the use of gene therapy to treat cancer in their patients.
