Important Do's And Don'ts After Cancer Treatment

Post undergoing taxing cancer treatment, the cancer survivor is eager to get back to his healthy self. Best cancer hospital in India suggest the dos and don’ts below to help the patient recover quickly post the treatment.

DO’s:

Adopt a healthy lifestyle - Avoid obesity, exercise regularly to keep your weight in check. Make sure your diet includes all the required nutrients. Adequate 7-8 hours of sleep goes a long way in the recovery process.

Go for regular health check-ups and regular screening - A routine physical examination will enable you to track any cancer development within the body at an early stage. This will significantly reduce the risk and increase the success of treatment dramatically.

Destress - The emotional and physical stress of the treatment may have taken a toll on your psyche. Using effective coping strategies like meditation and counselling to deal with stress can significantly improve your quality of life by helping you to relieve depression and anxiety. Joining cancer support groups and interacting with family and friends are effective stress management strategies.

Take your medications regularly as prescribed - Taking the medicines at the right time ensures the drug maintains its levels in your body and keeps the pain under control.

DON’T:

Do not smoke - Smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer and its recurrence. Best Cancer Hospitals in India advise to avoid passive smoking as well. Don’t sit in the vicinity of the person who is smoking. If you find quitting smoking difficult, seek help.

Consume alcohol - It is recommended not to drink. But if you choose to drink, do so in moderation. Weigh the risks of drinking alcohol and talk with your doctor about this.

Expose yourself to excess sunlight - Sunlight contains UV rays that cause skin cancer. While mild sunlight is beneficial for Vitamin D, however too much exposure to the sun may lead to cancer development.

Exert excessively - Do not lift anything substantial or overexert yourself in any way. Remember that overall recovery takes about 3-5 months. Do what you can and make the changes slowly.

Usually, a patient is briefed about his post-cancer-treatment care and we suggest you stick by it. This is a general list of dos and don’ts that are listed here. Please, feel free to modify it as per your doctor’s recommendation.
