Know the Treatment of Prostate Cancer

There are many options to choose from when it comes to prostate cancer treatment. Which option is chosen by the doctor depends on a few factors like:

The stage of cancer- this is based on the size of your tumor and how far it has spread

How quickly the tumor is likely to grow

Age of the patient and his health condition

Option preferred by the patient

Options for prostate cancer treatment

Watchful waiting - Most prostate cancer grows slowly, and doctors may follow a wait and watch policy. The doctor may think it’s better not to treat it unless it changes or causes symptoms. During this period the doctor will closely observe the changes and conduct regular tests to monitor the cancer.

Surgery –to remove all or part of the prostate will depend on the size and location of the tumor.

Radiation- involves the use of high-energy waves to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. The type of radiation therapy used for prostate cancer will differ from that used to treat cancer which has spread to other parts of the body.

Hormone therapy -Some of the hormones produced in the body can actually boost the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells. Hormone therapy is aimed at lowering levels of such hormones or stopping the cells from using them.

Proton Beam Radiation- is a special kind of radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer. It uses very small particles to kill cancer cells that have not spread.

Immunotherapy- uses the body’s immune system to fight advanced stages of prostate cancer.

Chemotherapy- Uses drugs to treat the disease when it has spread outside your prostate and hormone therapy is not working.

Bisphosphonate therapy- is used if the disease has reached the bones.
