Everyone Should Know - Types & Stages of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is considered to be the most common form of cancer in women. A number of women fall prey to breast cancer for one reason or the other. Breast cancer has a number of types. Some of them are very common than others while others are the combinations of several cancers. 1. Ductal carcinoma in situ: This is considered to be the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer and it is an early stage breast cancer which doesn’t spread to other parts of the body. 


2. Invasive ductal carcinoma:This kind of cancer starts in the milk ducts of the breasts and then grows into the other parts of the surrounding tissue. It is the most common form of breast cancer. 


3.Invasive lobular carcinoma:It starts in the milk-producing glands of the breasts. Around 10 percent of invasive breast cancers are invasive lobular carcinoma. 

Stages of breast cancer: 

Breast cancer treatment in India is possible and the same is given after knowing the stage of breast cancer. Following are the different stages of breast cancer: 

  • Stage 0 is ductal carcinoma in situ. Under this stage, cancer hasn’t spread from the duct to the surrounding tissues.
  • In stage 1, cancer didn’t spread to other parts and the tumor is not more than 2 cm in terms of size. 
  • In stage 2, cancer is 2 cm or smaller and spreads to other parts such as underarm lymph nodes.
  • In stage 3, cancer extends to 5 cm in overall size and also involves itself to the axillary lymph nodes. 
  • In stage 4, cancer spreads from the breast to other parts of the body such as lungs, brain, liver, and bones. 

Recurrent cancer is the stage where the disease begins to reappear after getting its initial treatment, even when the treatment at first was successful. It is because of the undetected cancer cells or the spread of the disease before it began.
