Prostate cancer - Overview, Symptoms and Prevention Tips

Prostate is a tiny gland having size of a walnut which lies underneath a man’s bladder.  Its function is to produce the fluid that creates the semen. It goes through two stages of growth: Once when the man hits puberty and once around the age of 25 years.

There are many reasons for prostate cancer to arise and it usually begins when cells in prostate gland start to grow and divide faster than the normal cells usually do. This way the cells trigger the tumour development which can gradually expand across the surrounding tissues, lymph nodes, organs and ultimately bones. Prostate cancer is one of the most popular cancers in men.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

  • Difficulty in urinating
  • Pain in bones
  • Urinating frequently, usually during night
  • Blood in the semen or urine
  • Uneasiness in the pelvic part
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Lower back pain
  • Tests for checking prostate cancer

PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen is a test in which blood sample is taken from a vein and then tested for PSA which is a substance produced in prostate gland. As it is a natural production, a minimal amount of it is normal but when the production exceeds the level, it might be an indication for prostate enlargement, infection or even cancer.

DRE or Digital Rectal Exam, in this the doctor examines the shape, size and texture of the prostate gland and further suggests some tests. PSA with DRE together, can identify the cancer at early stages.

Ultrasound using a tiny probe by inserting it into the rectum, which uses sound waves to produce a digital image of the prostate gland.
Genetic tests and sample collection of prostate tissue are some other procedures to check any abnormality in prostate gland.
